Meet the Golden Girls

As our backyard garden (on Long Island) grew we kept having that feeling that something was missing from our overall dream. With our decision of growing organically and needing a source of compost & manure; chickens seemed like the right decision to make. They can turn the soil, they eat bugs, they produce eggs. What more convincing do you need?

How the conversation of bringing chickens into our home went:

Brandon: We should get chickens for the backyard.

Erika: Ok!

And thats a wrap on our chickens! It was one of the easiest and best decisions we made as an addition to our small homestead.

Since introducing chickens into our plans we are able to offer fresh, organic, free range eggs for sale at our Farm Stand, in addition to egg products like hand-made pasta & mayonnaise. We can reduce our footprint on the global waste scale; as we feed all edible kitchen scraps to our chickens & add our chicken compost back into our soils for better Cut Flowers.

We currently have 5 backyard hens who produce about three dozen eggs per week - about 5 eggs/chicken/week - each named after the Golden Girls.
